How Long Does Solar Installation Take in UP? The Complete Timeline from Site Visit to First Bill

Most homeowners in Lucknow and across UP assume that installing solar means booking a date, having a crew come up to the roof, and that's it. The reality involves a government portal registration, a DISCOM technical feasibility review, a net metering meter installation by UPPCL, and a subsidy disbursement process - each step with its own timeline and paperwork. Understanding the full sequence before you start prevents frustration and helps you plan around the parts that are outside your installer's control.

The First Week: Assessment and Portal Registration

Day 1-3: Free Site Assessment

The process begins with a site visit from the installer. During this visit, the assessor measures usable roof area, checks the structural integrity of the roof (especially important for older constructions in Barabanki and Hardoi where RCC slabs may have had limited maintenance), analyses shade sources such as water tanks, staircase rooms, and neighbouring buildings, and measures the sanctioned load from your electricity meter. The sanctioned load matters because UPPCL ties the permitted solar system size to your sanctioned load. The output of this visit is a formal proposal showing system size, equipment specifications, cost, projected monthly savings, and subsidy applicability.

Day 3-5: PM Surya Ghar Portal Registration

This step is mandatory and must happen before any physical work begins. Registration on pmsuryaghar.gov.in is the trigger that makes the subsequent subsidy disbursement possible. If panels go up before portal registration, the system is ineligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy. The registration requires your Aadhaar number, your UPPCL consumer number (from your electricity bill), and your bank account details for subsidy credit. Either the homeowner does this directly or the installer handles it on their behalf - confirm which approach your installer takes before signing the contract.

Week 2: DISCOM Approval and Equipment

Day 5-10: DISCOM Technical Feasibility Approval

After portal registration, the local DISCOM (UPPCL circle office) conducts a technical review to confirm that the proposed system size is appropriate for your sanctioned load and that the local grid can accept solar export from your connection. In Lucknow and Kanpur, this review typically takes 5-7 working days. In some eastern UP districts including Barabanki, Sitapur, and Hardoi, processing times can stretch to 10-14 days due to higher application volumes relative to available staff. Physical installation cannot begin until this approval is received.

Day 10-15: Equipment Procurement

Once DISCOM approval is in hand, the installer orders or allocates the specific equipment: solar panels, inverter, mounting hardware, AC and DC cables, and protection components. Most Lucknow-based installers carry 3-10 kW worth of standard residential equipment in stock, which means procurement for typical residential jobs is a matter of days. Larger commercial systems or non-standard equipment specifications can require 7-10 days for delivery from the distributor.

Week 3: Physical Installation and Commissioning

Day 15-17: Physical Installation

A standard 3-5 kW residential rooftop installation is a 1-2 day job for a crew of three to four technicians. The typical sequence is: mounting structure installation on day one (drilling, waterproofing, anchoring the aluminium rail system to the roof), followed by panel placement, DC cabling, and inverter mounting on day two. The AC connection to your distribution board and earthing work is completed on the second day. A well-coordinated crew can complete a 5 kW residential system in Lucknow or Kanpur in one long day if site conditions are straightforward.

Day 17-18: Commissioning and Handover

Commissioning is the process of configuring the inverter, running the system through a test cycle to verify output matches expected values, and setting up the monitoring app on the customer's phone. At handover, you should receive: the warranty card for each panel, the inverter warranty document, an installation completion certificate, a wiring diagram of the system, the monitoring app login credentials, and the net metering application documents that the installer will submit to UPPCL. Ensure you receive all of these before signing off.

Months 1-3: Net Metering and First Bill

Week 4-12: Net Metering Meter Installation

After physical commissioning, your installer submits the net metering application to UPPCL. A UPPCL inspector then visits to verify that the installation matches the approved design. Following the inspection, UPPCL schedules the replacement of your existing meter with a bidirectional net metering meter that records both import and export units separately.

This is the step with the most variability. In Lucknow city, the process from application to meter installation takes 45-75 days in most cases. In eastern UP districts and smaller towns across Sitapur, Hardoi, Raebareli, and Sultanpur, the timeline can extend to 90 days or longer. During this waiting period, your system is fully operational and generating electricity - but exported units are going to the grid untracked. These exports before the bidirectional meter installation are not credited. The sooner the net metering application is submitted after commissioning, the less time is lost.

Month 2-3: Your First Net Metering Bill

Once the bidirectional meter is installed, the next UPPCL billing cycle produces your first true net metering bill. This bill shows your gross import units, your gross export units, and the net chargeable units (import minus export credits). For a well-sized system, many households see their net payable bill fall to Rs 200-500 per month - the fixed charges that cannot be offset by solar export, regardless of how much you generate.

Month 8-12: PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Disbursement

The PM Surya Ghar subsidy (up to Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW system) is not paid at installation time. After your system is commissioned and inspected, your application goes through a verification process at the DISCOM and then at MNRE level. In UP, the subsidy amount is typically credited directly to the registered bank account within 6-10 months of installation. Some applicants in Lucknow and Kanpur have received it in 5-6 months; in some eastern districts it has taken up to 12 months. The disbursement is a direct bank transfer - there is no physical cheque or office visit required.

Common Delays and How to Avoid Them

The most common cause of subsidy rejection and processing delay in UP is a name mismatch between the Aadhaar card and the UPPCL electricity bill. If your electricity connection is in a family member's name while your Aadhaar is in yours, resolve this before starting the process. The second most common issue is registering under the wrong DISCOM or wrong consumer number. Verify your consumer number directly on your latest UPPCL bill.

Sunwize coordinates the full paperwork process for customers - from portal registration through to the net metering application submission and follow-up with the UPPCL section office. Knowing the exact status of your application at each stage removes the most stressful part of going solar.
